Thanksgiving Recipe Round-up

This week is one of the biggest food holidays of the year, Thanksgiving. And since Thanksgiving is all about sharing, I asked some of my foodie friends to share some of their Thanksgiving recipes so I can share them with you.

Because we all are a little a lot stressed around this time of year. And trying to find a recipe to take to your significant others mom’s home for the big day that will WOW everyone at the table is mind boggling on top of all the other stresses, like trying to decide what shoes to wear with your outfit! I mean really, should you wear heels, flats, or boots?

Plus, you have to decide how to wear your hair and then your boyfriend (significant other) announces he has "volunteered" you to make what?!? When?!? And for how many people?!? What time are we supposed to be there?!?

Oh the joys of family gatherings during the holidays!

No need to freak out because we have you covered. There's a recipe for cranberry salad, stuffing/dressing, dinner rolls, drinks, and everyone's favorite, dessert.

So sit back, pour yourself a glass (or two) of wine, relax, and tell your hubby you've got it covered.

Now if only you can decide what shoes to wear?

1.) Smoked Bourbon Gravy | Vindulge
Mary teaches you how you can get the taste of smoked gravy without ever smoking your bird.

2.)  Fall Harvest Stuffing | Baking in a Tornado
Karen shares with us her Fall Harvest Stuffing made with a smoky cornbread. Are you noticing a trend here? This stuffing mixed with the smoked gravy sounds delicious!

Another traditional side dish for Thanksgiving is potatoes. And you might see these spuds prepared in many different ways including mashed, au gratin, and sweet potatoes.

3.) Gratin Dauphinois | Mon Petit Four
Beeta shares with us a French version of potatoes, Gratin Dauphinois. Now don't let the fancy French name scare you away as these are easy to make and so worth it! This dish consists of potato slices that are layered with cream and gruyere cheese before they're baked. The cheese forms a crispy layer with creamy, tender potatoes underneath. Those French definitely do know how to cook!

4.) Potatoes Au Gratin with Creamy Jalapeno Sauce | Living Sweet Moments
As if those didn't have your mouth watering yet for the big day to come, Tiffany spices things up a bit with her Potatoes Au Gratin with Creamy Jalapeno Sauce. Mmm, y'all know how I love Mexican foods!

5.) Coconut Sweet Potatoes | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
Who can forget these from last year? A taste of the tropics mixed in with classic Thanksgiving flavors.

6.) Tamale and Cornbread Dressing with Chorizo | This is How I Cook
Another Mexican inspired recipe for Thanksgiving is this Tamale and Cornbread Dressing with Chorizo by Abbe.

7.) Biscuit and Cornbread Dressing | Chattavore
Mary brings us back to the states, down South to be exact, with this Biscuit and Cornbread Dressing. Thank you m'aam!

8.) Ricotta Filled Cornbread recipe | Living Sweet Moments
Tiffany combines buttermilk and ricotta cheese in a cornbread that is based on a traditional Jewish dish called "malay". It's a mixture of sweet, savory, while bursting with flavors.

9.) Apricot and Almond Stuffing | The Hungary Buddha
A Middle Eastern inspired stuffing that's packed full of flavors.

10.) Homemade Dinner Rolls | Living Sweet Moments
Here Tiffany shares her recipe with a tutorial so even the most amateur baker can have these light, fluffy dinner rolls on their Thanksgiving table this year.

No Thanksgiving table is complete without the cranberry sauce. I'm sharing with y'all four different ways you can enjoy this seasonal berry.

11.) Crazy Easy Fresh Cranberry Sauce | Full Belly Sisters
A few wonderful fresh ingredients and you have yourself a show stopping side dish!

12.)  Greek Yogurt Cornbread Cranberry Trifle | Full Belly Sisters
Such an easy dessert to make, yet so elegant looking.

13.)  Frozen Cranberry Salad | This is How I Cook
A frozen mixture of cream cheese, Cool Whip, cranberries, pineapple, and walnuts. Yes, please!

14.)  Cranberry Cherry Sauce | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
Made with red wine. Just another excuse to open up a bottle of wine!

15.) Pomegranate Sparkling Sangria with Asian Pear | Diary of a Mad Hausfrau
Start your Thanksgiving Day guests off with this festive drink for a merrier celebration.

16.)  Harvest Salad | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
A variety of autumn vegetables and fruits combined for a healthy and flavorful dish. Perfect for all vegans any time of the year!

17.) Lebanese Spiced Squash with Roasted Fennel Salad | The Hungary Buddha
Acorn squash with the flavors of za' atar seasonings.

18.) Pecan Pie | Platter Talk
Dan shares a recipe that's been in his family for decades. A traditional recipe that's not only delicious, but holds many memories and hope for more!

19.) Maple Pecan Cream Cheese Pound Cake | This is How I Cook
A taste of fall with every bite!

20.)  GF Chocolate Chai Latte Pound Cake | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
I didn't forget about you chocolate lover's out there!

21.)  Apple Pie | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
Blends apples with bourbon for a smooth tasting apple pie like you've never had before!

22.) Soft Gingersnap Cookies | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
Perfect for keeping you from eating all the desserts before dinner.

23.) No-Churn Bourbon and Pumpkin Ginger Spice ice cream | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
Easy to make and oh so deliciously creamy!

24.) Bourbon and Brown Sugar Sauce | Sweet and Spicy Monkey
This sauce makes everything taste better!

25.) Cinnamon Baked Donuts | Amanda Bootes Blog
Easy to make without any specialized equipment or techniques. Mmm, Donuts!

26.) Pumpkin Caramel Cheesecake French Macarons | Diary of a Mad Hausfrau
A bite size cookie with a taste of pumpkin cheesecake and a caramel finish.

27.)  Turkey, Cranberry and Sweet Potato Pie recipe | This is How I Cook
This savoury pie of turkey sausage, breast of turkey, cranberries, and sweet potatoes all enclosed with a flaky pie crust is a meal in itself. This would be great for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving!

Your Favorite Recipes of 2014

As 2014 comes to a close, what better way to spend some of these last days, than looking back at some of your favorite recipes here at Sweet and Spicy Monkey. I say “Your” favorite because if it was up to me, they would all be listed. I might be just a little bias {smile}.

Beginning with January, here are some of your favorite recipes from 2014…

Sweet and Spicy Monkey Bread. What better way to remember January 2014 than with a sweet treat that just so happens to have my blog name it, “Sweet and Spicy Monkey” Bread!

February had your chocolate cravings satisfied, at least for a little while, with my version of The Ultimate Chocolate Lover’s Breakfast. I can’t say I blame ya, after all, who can resist all this chocolatey yumminess of chocolate pancakes with chocolate syrup drizzled all over.

March was a month of indecision as there was a tie between two of March’s recipes. It seems y’all couldn’t decide between something sweet, with Orange Creamsicle Cookies

or something crunchy like my Homemade Tortilla Chips. So they both win for March!

April’s winner, hands down, was my recipe for Gluten Free Lemon Crepes with Lemon Cream Cheese Filling. What a delicious way to welcome Spring!

And you let me know that y’all love your lemon treats by making my Lemon Coconut Refrigerator Cake your favorite for May.

Ah, June ~ summertime chilling with sun, sandy beaches, and palm trees. And what better way to enjoy those long summer days than eating my Homemade Coconut Ice Cream. Not only is this ice cream gluten free, but it’s also dairy free and no churn needed.

Your tropical taste buds were just getting warmed up (or should I say cooled down) in June with my Homemade Coconut ice cream because I woke all of your island taste buds up this summer with my Coconut Pound Cake.

A triple threat dose of coconut to whisk you away to your tropical island paradise. My most popular recipe by far since starting Sweet and Spicy Monkey. It also got Thor's stamp of approval!

August had you craving chocolate once again (it has been awhile, since February to be exact) with my recipe for Gluten Free Chocolate Chai Latte pound Cake.

September showed me you needed something to munch on while watching all those football games. What better way to enjoy the games than with my Tangy Peach Mustard Wings that simmer in the crockpot while you watch the game and into the oven they go to get all crispy before the next game starts.

You were still craving munchies for the games in October when y’all reached for my Sweet & Salty Snack Mix made with Annie’s Homegrown cheddar bunnies. The games are so much better when you’re munching on cheddar bunnies!

I could tell y’all were looking for something to help keep you warm with a taste of the season with my Crockpot Pumpkin Turkey Chili. What better way to warm up on a cool Fall night than with a big bowl of chili!

December’s favorite is my Peppermint Meringue Cookies. Puffy clouds of white fluff with a kiss of peppermint, sprinkled with silver and gold, perfect for all your Holiday parties. What a delicious way to end the year 2014!

I want to take this time to say thank you to all who stop by my little corner of this World Wide Web to read, comment, pin, tweet, or just hang out and see what I've been up to. Because without all of you, there would be no me. So Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

And if you enjoy what you see here, please leave me a comment as I love to hear from y'all, even if it's just to say Hello.

Wishing y'all the best eats in the upcoming New Year of 2015!

Welcome

I'm Julie and I would like to welcome you to the Sweet and Spicy monkey blog! Here I will share recipes, photos (as we all like to see what we are about to create!), helpful cooking tips, and other learned stuff. My mom is who taught me how to cook and bake when I was growing up and I have always had a passion for both, even though baking is my favorite of the two!

I'm just like you as not everything I set out to make turns out like it's supposed to. It's too runny or not creamy enough, it doesn't look anything like the picture, or it just plain taste yucky! But I keep on cooking and baking because I love it. However, the one food recipe that still eludes me for some unexplained reason is homemade macaroni & cheese. Sure I can whip up a delicious box of Kraft macaroni & cheese just like everybody else but when it comes to homemade mac & cheese....well, I must say I am only human. Homemade mac & cheese is the unattainable unicorn for me. And I have tried some of the best of Georgia's Southern homemade mac & cheese recipes with no success. So it's safe to say that I probably will not be making any homemade mac & cheese recipes here unless of course for some unknown reason (or peer pressure) I get a wild hair and decide to try my hand at it once more.

In the meantime, you will see a variety of recipes for you that range from healthy, vegan, and gluten-free to ooey, gooey, creamy, and just plain yummy! I love food that is not only delicious but simple to make. I hope you will join me through this journey in my kitchen and on this blog (as I am new to all this) and get ready to enjoy some delicious recipes to share with your family and friends!

Here's a picture of my mom, the one who inspired me to bake (on the left), my dad (I miss you Daddy), and me (on the right).
